the petite writer podcast

The new podcast by The Petite Writer is live! It’s available on many different platforms, so choose your favorite and come say hi! 😊

How the Podcast Started

Technically, the podcast is still in its early phases of development even though I have already released a few episodes. The Petite Writer Podcast developed from my love of literature, writing, story structure, literary theory, culture, and an interest in creative intelligence.

These topics reflect the diversity of storytelling and everything that a story can cover and discuss. I choose topics that are related to language, writing, reading, and psychology in literature.

I particularly enjoy podcast episodes that deal with a prominent issue in a work of literature. Or topics that are able to teach you something about the art of writing. Much of my knowledge comes from personal work experience and my Ph.D. studies in English Literature. However, I am also always learning and testing new knowledge in my own work, which I one day hope to release as a book.

Of course, some podcast topics will be more light-hearted while others will cover serious issues in culture and literary depiction of the human condition around the globe. It is my hope that this podcast will be able to both entertain and provide some knowledge.

I do my best to always complete in-depth research on a topic before recording an episode for it, however, if you notice any mistakes or would like to continue the discussion please feel free to reach out to me.

Equipment Used for the Podcast

Here’s to honesty and to hopefully inspire others who may want to start their own podcast! It really doesn’t take much to get started. In fact, I had precisely $0 to invest in starting a podcast, which means that everything I used when I started were things that I already had and software that is free to use. I have so far only done one upgrade to my equipment which you will see below. If I add more upgrades to the equipment that I use, I will add them here.

Equipment Summary:

Audio Recording:

I record my voice on my iPhone. That’s it. I turn on the voice record app on my phone, place the microphone next to my right cheek and I talk normally. After much trial and error, I discovered that this location of the microphone significantly reduced the sound of both plosives and fricatives in the audio (i.e. p, b, t, v, s, th, etc.). I also tried to use the mic on the earphones that came with the phone. However, it doesn’t sound as good. To remove the background noise as much as possible while recording, I record the audio while snuggled on my sofa. Not only is it super comfortable, but I also find that the sofa does a decent job of isolating my voice from ambient noise.

Audio Editing:

I use Audacity to edit the audio of the podcast before uploading it. It’s super simple and very easy to get used to using the program if you’ve never done it before. To get the best audio out of your recording, do a few searches online on how to edit podcast audio for best results with the help of Audacity and you will quickly have a plethora of resources to help you adjust the settings to best suit your voice and your podcast.

Video Editing (for YouTube):

I used to use OpenShot to create a video version of my podcast episodes in order to upload them to YouTube. Easy to download, simple to use, and does a decent job, especially if you are just starting out.

UPGRADE:

I have now bought the Wondershare Filmora 9 video editor for $69.99. The previous video editor was great, but as I am slowly expanding the podcast and want to have higher quality videos for my YouTube channel, this was the perfect choice for me. Fantastic and easy to use editing options that really don’t take a lot of time to learn.

Podcast Hosting Platforms

I use PodBean and Anchor in order to get my podcast episodes uploaded to as many different platforms as possible. I will leave the full list of platforms below. For some of them, you have to create an account for yourself, while for others PodBean and Anchor will do it for you. I will write a detailed blog post about how to use podcast hosting platforms in the future and which ones I think are the best. I am not currently paying for any monthly subscriptions on these platforms.

Apple Podcasts
PodBean
Anchor
Spotify
YouTube

For now, this is all it took for me to start a podcast of my own. 🙂

If you have any ideas or topics that you would like me to record an episode on simply drop me an email at hello@thepetitewriter.com.

The podcast will soon develop its own weekly schedule (I’m aiming for two episodes per week). So, I hope that you will join me in discussing literary works and their importance in society.
